Independent Reading Book
Throughout the year, you will be required to choose a book of your choosing that is appropriate for your reading level. This book is brought to class every day when school is in session which can be a digital copy or printed copy. At home, you will be completing a weekly reading log and a book project selection of your choice each month in class. The reading must a fictional novel, so non-fiction books are out of the question. When selecting a book follow the Goldilocks Rule for Choosing A Novel by choosing the "Just Right Book" for your independent reading:

- I have read this book many times before.
- I understand and can retell the story without much effort.
- I know and understand almost every word.
- I can read the book smoothly and fluently without much practice.
- There are five or more words on a page that I do not recognize.
- I am confused about what is happening in the story.
- When I read the words I sound choppy.
- I need help when reading this book
- The book is new to me and the topic is interesting to me.
- I understand what is happening in most of the story.
- I can retell what I have read.
- I recognize most of the words (2-3 words) on the page, but there are some words to work on.
- I can read the book by myself but may need help if I hit a tough spot.
Independent Reading Log
Every week, you will complete an Independent Book Reading Log for the novel you are reading. During Independent Reading Times during class, I will call a conference with you to discuss how your reading goals are progressing. Every Friday, you will turn in your Independent Book Reading Log and will be graded promptly.
Directions:
1. Read the "Student Reading Logs Expectations" to examine the expectations of the reading logs.
2. Complete your book project by the following due dates for "Book Project Presentation" Day:
Book #1 - Sept. 17th
Book #2 - Oct. 22nd
*Book #3 - Nov. 19th

Book #5 - Feb. 11th
Book #6 - March 17th
Book #7 - May 6th
*Book #8 - May 13th
*Book Celebration: You will bring in a food item that would best represent your book to the class.

If you are having trouble finding a novel, here are a few websites to help you find a novel that you interested in reading:
1. Find A Book - Input your Lexile Level for reading and select a genre of reading you like to populate a list of novels.
2. Accelerated Reader - If you are purchasing a book and don't know the Lexile Reading Level, you will want to verify the book is at your level. If a title doesn't populate, check with me to see if your book is fine for independent reading.
